Blond dye on black hair?

i saw this tutorial online showing a girl using blond dye on black hair. the turnout was a very pretty brown color. i have black hair. i'd like light brown hair, but i wouldn't mind med-brown. to get that color, would it be best i use brown dye or blond dye? &if i used blond dye, would i get a light brown color if i redyed my hair again with blond dye?
